Our Green Story

We love our amazing country and want to keep Scotland beautiful. This is why we have always had a strong commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism.

Sustainable Tourism

Stay Wild

Imagine a wild, mountainous landscape covered in dense forest and home to brown bear, wild boar and wolves. Two thousand years ago that is what the Romans found as they attempted to expand their empire into Scotland. They retreated, defeated by the landscape and declared this land the end of the world.

The Romans called this land ‘Caledonia’, meaning ‘wooded heights’. Later, that name led to the term ‘Caledonian Forest’ describing the native woodland which covered much of the Highlands of Scotland.

Today, after centuries of deforestation, less than 1% of the original forests survive and with many other countries now repeating the same ecological mistakes the onus is on us to reverse the damage and provide a model for similar projects across the globe.

Doing our bit for Scotland's wilderness

In 2011 HAGGiS Adventures teamed up with 'Trees for Life', a Scottish charity specifically dedicated to restoring 1,000 square miles of self-sustaining, wild, Caledonian Forest with the aim of helping Scotland 'Stay Wild'. Under our 'Stay Wild' project we have raised thousands of pounds in support of the work Trees for Life undertake and our customers have planted well over 600 trees in our dedicated 'HAGGiS Grove'. We hope to continue this partnership well into the future to ensure large areas of Scotland remain as natural as possible.

How can you get involved?

Plant a tree in the HAGGiS Grove

Imagine planting a tree that will stand forever as part of the restored Caledonian Forest. The HAGGiS Grove is a dedicated forest developed by HAGGiS customers and selected trips will get the chance to leave their own tree as their contribution to helping Scotland 'Stay Wild'. These trips will be met by a Ranger, hear about the work of Trees for Life and plant a tree in HAGGiS Grove.

Dedicate a Tree

If you are not lucky enough to travel on one of our selected trips you can still choose to leave your mark in Scotland. Our 'Dedicate a Tree' scheme allows you to have a tree planted in the HAGGiS Grove by Trees for Life on your behalf. You could also choose to gift a tree, perhaps one of the most eco-friendly and unique presents you can buy. You also get a Certificate as proof of your dedication.

Environmental Charity Offering ECO Scheme

We are committed to sustainable tourism and to preserving Scotland's natural wildlife, environment and unique cultures for future generations to enjoy. We have pioneered an Eco Scheme where you can make an optional £2 donation when booking any tour. We will match every £1 you donate, with proceeds going to leading Scottish environmental charity, the Trees for Life.

Trees for Life is a Scottish charity dedicated to restoring 600 square miles of self-sustaining, Caledonian forest. In the last few years we have raised thousands of pounds in support for the charity.

Resource Efficiency

We all know that choosing to travel by coach ensures low CO2 emissions per person. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism, in 2013 we introduced regular training for all our drivers to ensure they are aware of the most fuel efficient driving techniques. Within the first year, this training saved over 7 tonnes of CO2 emissions, that’s enough to fill seven, 10m wide hot air balloons!

As part of our continuing sustainability journey, we feel it’s increasingly important to provide our guests and our team with the necessary tools and information to allow them to make responsible travel choices whenever possible. With this in mind, we are now happy to provide you with opportunities to carbon offset your travel experience.

Off Set Your Carbon Footprint

If you’re looking to offset your carbon footprint for an upcoming or previous travel experience, our not-for-profit TreadRight Foundation has identified four leading carbon offset programs - Conservation International Carbon Fund, myclimate, The Nature Conservancy, and Rainforest Concern – Forest Credits - that provide travellers with a number of ways in which to offset your travel experiences and a variety of carbon offset projects to choose from.

Supporting Local Festivals

In Scotland we are proud of our wild festivals which reflect who we are - a nation which knows how to party! Each year thousands of visitors take part in various festivals which leave them with great memories. It just happens that some of the festivals, like the Up Helly Aa Viking Fire Festival in Shetland, are locally run and rely on the donations of local businesses.

HAGGiS Adventures are committed to sustainable tourism and preserving the unique spirit of Scotland. Over the last ten years of our visits to Shetland with the Up Helly Aa tour we have been contributing to the local economy. We are delighted to announce that we have also recently become donors for this Festival to make sure that more travellers can enjoy this fiery spectacle.
